The foundation of the Indian economy is agriculture. A little more than two thirds of the people work in agriculture. Approximately 30% of the national income comes from agriculture, according to the Agricultural Census.
A few of the main issues facing agriculture in India are population pressure, limited and fragmented land, inadequate irrigation and storage facilities, the depletion of natural resources, including soil fertility, and insufficient use of modern technologies and equipment. The first step in overcoming some of the major obstacles is to provide farmers with pertinent knowledge, particularly on contemporary technologies. Second, by giving farmers the backward and forward connections they need to make agriculture a viable source of income.
